Diomande Memorial Scholarship

The Diomande Memorial Scholarship was established in 2017 in memory of a former Unaccompanied Refugee Minor (URM) client who was truly committed to his education, but unfortunately passed away due to illness before he was able to achieve his goals of graduating high school and pursuing further education.

In this client’s memory, annual scholarships are awarded to youth in the URM Program in support of their educational dreams and pursuits. Applicants must be a current URM client with a concrete plan to pursue further education or training after high school, either at a college or vocational training program. Applicants must also demonstrate strong academic potential, commitment to achieving their education goals, and a financial need related to the cost of attending their educational program of choice.

If you are interested in learning more about the scholarship or donating to this cause, please contact the URM Program at urm-info@ascentria.org. URM Program donations can be made here.

Diomande Memorial Scholarship

In June 2017, Shimendi Tewolde, (pictured above with Diomande jersey), and Annick Uwineza, (pictured far right at URM Graduation Party), were the first two recipients of the Diomande Memorial Scholarship. Shimendi and Annick both received scholarships in the amount of $500, as the candidates who best embodied the spirit and qualifications for the award and demonstrated significant commitment to their education.

Shimendi is a 21 year old URM from Eritrea and a recent graduate of Somerville High School. Shimendi plans to use his scholarship towards books and supplies in support of his post-secondary education at Bunker Hill Community College.

Annick, a 19 year old URM from Democratic Republic of Congo, is completing a Gateway to College Program at Springfield Technical Community College and is on track to graduate with a High School Diploma in December 2017. Annick plans to use her scholarship towards college courses in her journey to become a Physician’s Assistant.
